Objective: An efficient, low-maintenance Sedona getaway for 1-2 with ample space to accommodate a variety of combinations of visiting friends/family.
Challenges/Opportunities: Located in the Red Rock State Park in Sedona,AZ and backing up to park land. Unimpeded 270-degree views of iconic Sedona landmarks and panorama. Site is on a steep grade with the exception of a narrow existing buildable area. Bedrock is shallow so any excavation will be costly.
Solution: THIS SITE DOES THE TALKING: KEEP THE DESIGN SIMPLE, RESPOND TO THE LAND, AND GET OUT OF THE WAY. Limited, tiered, buildable areas and the friendly climate suggest separating the garage and the main visitor areas from the main structure. A combination of purposeful covered areas and walkways connect the separate masses. Utilizing repeated modular products like Omniblock and perforated metal sheets en masse for construction allows for easier transportation of building materials to somewhat remote site. Combined with simplicity of design and close coordination with subs/GC, imported labor can be used more efficiently.
What is “different”: Insulated "Omniblock" CMU for all exterior building walls provides a true finish-material structure. Three separate "block" masses tier with the natural, existing flat areas of the site and the space between them takes on purpose and function beyond just circulation.
Deliverables: Photo-realistic fly-through animation with geo-referenced terrain and placement of important surrounding natural and man-made landmarks. Revit-generated construction drawings. Early design coordination with GC/subs/consultants to ensure accurate pricing and integrated sub-generated shops into the construction set.
