Objective: A low-maintenance river retreat residence with separate garage/hunting shed for extended family. Integrate existing house and master plan site for river access and future development.
Challenges/Opportunities: Located in rural Idaho with one opportunity for river access. Existing large trees and small house to be integrated into design. Vast, 360 site amenities including views of river, forest, fields, and mountains.
Solution: Use the existing house to help establish the grid for the main structure. A courtyard will help connect the existing to the new. The new main structure will be a long, simple form allowing access to the river on one end and view to the Southeast fields and mountains on the other. The long form will fit between two large existing trees. The new bedrooms will be the East end of the cruciform plan relating to the existing structure in scale and material. A large, sweeping gabion retaining wall will allow for river access by vehicle for boat launch and site circulation.
What is “different”: Initial design utilizes mass timber products for a majority of the structure and materials. A 4' grid would allow for optimized delivery of glulams and CLT panels to the site. Once on site, the panels, laid out in cadences, will reduce labor while achieving the aesthetic demand of the owner for interior wood finishes. "Skins" of corrugated metal and concrete tiles will tie in the exterior with the existing brick house.
Deliverables: Photo-realistic fly-through animation with geo-referenced terrain and placement of important surrounding natural and man-made landmarks. Revit-generated construction drawings. Early design coordination with GC/subs/consultants to ensure accurate pricing and integrated sub-generated shops into the construction set.
